Lessons from the ruins: Antigua, Guatemala
List: 7 interesting ideas from real estate, AI, mental health, and Human 3.0 life
Hi,
I recently spent some time in Antigua, Guatemala (pics are here on my IG).
Cobblestone streets. Volcanoes on the horizon. And ruins. Beautiful, crumbling stone churches everywhere you look.
I found the city's story fascinating because, in many ways, it reminded me of human life itself. Its history offers a blueprint for surviving and rebuilding after personal crises.
1. The Sunk Cost of Ruins
After the catastrophic Santa Marta earthquakes of 1773, the Spanish authorities didn't simply try to rebuild. They made the agonizing, monumental decision to abandon the capital entirely and rebuild it from scratch 45 kilometers away, creating what is now Guatemala City.
Antigua was left as a ghost town of ruins for decades before eventually transforming into the architectural treasure it is today.
We fail at this.
We often stay in unfulfilling careers, stale relationships, or failing projects because of how much time and effort we've already invested in them.
Antigua teaches us radical redirection.
Sometimes the structure is too compromised. Stop fixing what is gone. Walk away. Build on new ground.
2. "Baroque Antigüeño" and Antifragile Systems
The old European architectural styles and building techniques didn't work in Guatemala. The towers were too tall. The walls were too thin. Earthquakes shattered them again and again.
So the architects changed the blueprint.
They created Baroque Antigüeño: churches with short, stocky bell towers, massively thick walls, and low, squat profiles specifically designed to absorb seismic shocks and survive the constant movement of the earth.
Nassim Taleb's concept of antifragility fits beautifully here: don't simply tolerate stress; adapt to it, learn from it, and become stronger because of it.
Maybe that's the lesson for us, too.
If we stop expecting life to be stable and start designing our lives around the reality of chaos, we might become much harder to break.
Build "thick-walled" boundaries. Develop adaptable mindsets. Create systems that can absorb life's inevitable tremors.
3. Worshiping the Rubble
Antigua's ruins aren't hidden away or treated as scars. They're among the city's crown jewels.
The Convento de las Capuchinas and Santa Clara are used for weddings, photography, cultural events, and quiet reflection. The city's beauty exists, in part, because its ruined structures were preserved and integrated into modern life.
We spend so much energy hiding our personal failures, mistakes, and periods of struggle.
Antigua suggests another possibility: Maybe our history doesn't need to be perfectly intact to be beautiful, romantic, and profoundly functional. Maybe the cracks are part of the architecture.
