The Competence Trap

Hi,

Five years ago last week, I stood on the summit of K2 as the first Russian woman to reach the top. Days later, news of the neighboring Broad Peak tragedy reminded the mountaineering world that the mountains always have the final say.

Mountains have a way of teaching the same lesson over and over. Nature doesn't care how experienced you are. It doesn't remember your last summit. It doesn't reward confidence. Every decision begins at zero.

Success changes more than your resume. It changes your mindset.

When we become good at something, our internal danger meter quietly moves. What once felt risky starts to feel normal. Confidence grows. Caution shrinks.

Psychologists call this risk adaptation. We adjust to success. Our perception changes long before reality does.

We drive a little faster on roads we know well. We skip checklists because we've "done it a hundred times." We stop asking questions because we're convinced we already know the answer.

But a steep mountain doesn't become less steep because you've climbed twenty nine before. Markets don't become safer because your last investments worked. A relationship doesn't become stronger because you've navigated difficult ones in the past.

Competence is a gift. Overconfidence is its shadow.

The best performers understand this. They don't trust confidence alone. They trust systems. They slow down before important decisions. They seek opposing views. They respect uncertainty.

Because the world isn't impressed by how experienced we are.

It simply responds to the choices we make today.

Choose wisely.
